Facebook’s at it again and we all saw it coming.
Just when we thought that they have duplicated everything Snapchat had to offer, we were proven wrong. Facebook has announced that they will be adding a new “Stories option” soon.

Facebook, while blatantly copying Snapchat once again, has claimed that the ‘Stories’ format, originated by Snapchat, is merely a new paradigm in social media.
Kevin System, CEO of Instagram was quoted defending Instagram when Stories was launched:
“Just like when Facebook invented the [News] Feed, and every social product was like, ‘That’s an innovation, how do we adapt that to our network?’ You’re going to see stories pop up in other networks over time, because it’s one of the best ways to show visual information in chronological order”
Less than six months after the launch of Instagram Stories, the option is already being used by 150 million people each day. To put that into perspective, that’s the same number of daily active users that Snapchat reportedly has. Furthering that scale of comparison, 150 million users is exactly half of Instagram’s 300 million total daily actives where as Facebook has 1.179 billion daily active users. It’s clear to us on their motivation for giving it the old college try.
Now, although this may be frustrating for Snapchat, its great news for brands. The new Facebook “stories” will provide even more opportunities for brands to generate reach on the platform.
Facebook Stories is currently being tested in Ireland. But when will it launch for the rest of us? Facebook told TechCrunch that they’re planning to bring the option to more users “in the coming months”.
Do you think this will impact on the growth of Snapchat? Or do you think users are getting sick of all the profiles now being to similar so they will jump onto a new platform?
