Just when you thought you could escape them… Facebook has announced “a small test” of ads in Messenger.

The new advertisements WHEN launched (not if) will be featured in the lower part of the Messenger home screen, just below your recent conversations. This is where you will also see Birthday notifications the list of your friends currently active on Messenger.

The ads are loud and in your face– which advertisers will love, but for users… it’s theorized that it’s just another reason more people will leave Facebook. They will be placing ads in the final nooks and crannies where we thought they would never find us!

Facebook Testing New Ad Units in Messenger | Social Media Today

During the initial announcement, Facebook attempts to explain their justification for this update.

“No one will see an ad in a conversation without clicking on an ad experience on the Messenger home screen or starting a conversation with a brand – these test ads won’t originate in your conversations.”

We can all agree that it’s still a very risky move, which is why Facebook is keeping the initial trial run fairly small.

“Of course, the few people who are in this test are in complete control of their Messenger experience and can choose to hide/report specific ads using the dropdown menu in their Messenger.”

The new ads are first being tested in Australia and Thailand – It’ll be interesting to see the initial responses. Facebook has also added a heap of new functions and features to Messenger over the past 12 months, including bots, stickers, games and (no surprise here) Snapchat type tools.

Rumor has it that Facebook shared with their investors that they expect to reach peak ad load in the News Feed by mid-2017.

There’s billion people on Messenger every month, so it’s no surprise that ass in Facebook Messenger are laughing soon.
